Released in the United States in July 1961. This and "Saiyu-ki" were the first two Japanese theatrical animated features distributed in America. Despite being honored at the Venice Children's Film Festival in 1959, however, it made little impact when released in the U.S.
This film has been described as the first modern anime, and as the first animated color film to emerge from Japan.
Based on a story by Shin Uehara, itself adapted from Chinese mythology, including the old folktale "Pah-She Chuan" ("White Snake").
This film inspired many Japanese, including young Hayao Miyazaki, to become animators.
Some sources incorrectly describe Mimi, a small panda, as a cat.
Alternate title: Hakujaden.
